“view,” Strange Horizons, and Aging in SFF

Feeling my age on Strange Horizons

I’m feeling my age.

I invoke Ursula LeGuin with her wonderful collection of poetry 60 Odd (in honor of that milestone)—feeling my age can have an upside.

“view” is part of the special collection on Aging and SFF for Strange Horizons. It’s also part of a special collection for me. The March inhabits various character perspectives, sometimes across generations, sometimes around the same event. Sometimes across the entirety of a lifespan.

It’s also the poem where I lean in hard on my own lived experience, caring for loved ones who face health challenges, feeling the hitches and the aches myself, squinting over the trifocals that no longer serve. It’s a milestone year for me and this may be the capstone. I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you (SH generally and RS in particular) for this entire issue. It’s been a rough week in my professional life (and the professional and personal lives of many of my colleagues), so this demonstration of compassion and visibility is even more powerful with that juxtaposition.
