I wrote science fiction before I published science. Since my science always has been focused on infectious diseases and biological exposures, I’ve tended to apply that interest in my poetry and fiction. My interests include the long-term consequences of infectious disease, which include disability and psychological trauma.

I’m delighted to contribute an essay to the Disability Pride issue of Utopia SF—complete with tips on making your next invented infectious disease more believable, well-anchored in what we know about disease spillover, outbreaks and the biological processes of infection.
