Reunions

In the mid 2000s, I moved from rural Pennsylvania to Philadelphia. My new job was the best place I’ve ever worked–I suddenly had the space in my life to breathe. I returned to writing, something I had enjoyed in high school and college.

I found a circle of incredible poets–Kelley, Liz, and Dave (and Dave’s guide dog). I went to poetry readings with them, met in living rooms to workshop our pieces.

Life changes. I moved again. The computer I used for writing died in the middle of an upheaval; my writing email account (with all the contact information) shuttered at the same time. I was thrust into the hamster wheel of academia. Somewhere in the middle of this madness, I heard that Dave died.

Life continues to change. I managed to get back to writing during the COVID-19 pandemic, but that was a solitary activity. I found a new circle, wondered about those left from my first one.

One day, a poet I follow posted about a pub in Uppagus. I followed the link, got excited when I saw Kelley had a poem in the issue too. She’d also moved and we’d lost touch, but here she was–her beautiful words on the screen.

Reunions are lovely things–how much we change, how much we stay the same. This issue of Uppagus brings us back together: me, Kelley and Dave.
