I’ve been writing in this invented world since I was in high school. The characters who inhabit it feel a lot like family at this point–both in the real and the gay sense.
Someone once asked Ruth Bader Ginsberg about how many women would be ‘enough’ on the Supreme Court, and she (of course) answered nine. Given nine men in the past, ‘enough’ would be nine justices who are women.
How many is ‘enough’ queer characters, and is queer even the right word anymore? (It’s a word that works for me, for the identity I’ve embraced, but it doesn’t work for everyone.) Whatever we on the LGBTQIA2S+ spectrum call ourselves, we occupy the pages of my poems, stories and novels of the Sundered Houses.
